| Henderson was born in Glasgow,
Scotland. He apprenticed as a lithographer
(1887-1894) while studying evenings at the Glasgow
School of Art. He worked as a lithographer in
London, England (1894-1909) before coming to Regina,
Saskatchewan in 1910 where he worked as a commercial
artist and portrait painter. He later moved to the
Qu'Appelle Valley in 1916 where he lived until 1951 when
he moved to Victoria, British Columbia. Working in
oil, watercolour, charcoal, gouache and lithography, he
painted the Saskatchewan landscape and detailed native
portraits, especially the Cree, Assiniboine and Sioux
(1924-30). He is also known for his portraits of
Regina political and legal figures and his views of the
Rocky Mountains (1926) and Victoria, British
Columbia. He received an honorary doctorate from
the University of Saskatchewan in 1951. |
