| Leighton was born in Hastings,
England and studied at the Hastings School of Art;
Hornsey School of Art, London; and in Paris. He
came to Calgary, Alberta in 1929 where he remained
active until his death. Working in oil,
watercolour and pastel, his subject matter included
mountain landscapes, coastal scenes with fishing boats,
still life, flowers, buildings and urban scenes with
children playing. His English landscapes are set
in Kent, Sussex, Devon and Yorkshire. He also
painted in Vancouver, and Victoria and Duncan on
Vancouver Island, British Columbia. He designed
lithographs for Canadian Pacific Steamship Lines.
Leighton was Art Director at the Provincial Institute of
Technology and Art, Calgary (1929-35/38) and in 1933 he
organized the summer school which later became the Banff
School of Fine Arts. He founded the Alberta
Society of Artists and was a Fellow of the International
Institute of Arts and Letters. |
