Jim Nicoll was born in Fort McLeod, Alberta.  He studied at the University of Alberta, Edmonton (B.A. 1922, B.Sc. 1924); under Will Barnett at an Emma Lake Workshop (1957); and again under Will Barnett at the Art Students' League, New York City (1958-1959) but was largely self-taught.  He began painting in 1935.  He travelled and painted in Italy, Portugal and Spain (1959-1960).  Working with oil, watercolour, and etching his subjects include portraits, urban industrial scenes, and ranching scenes in the foothills of Alberta.  He married Marion Mackay in 1940.  He was the founding editor of Highlights, a magazine published by the A.S.A. and of which he was President in 1942.  He was also a member of the Senate of the University of Alberta (1925).  He held a solo exhibition at the Glenbow Museum and exhibited witht he R.C.A. in 1938, 1939, and 1948.  His work is represented in the Alberta Art Foundation, Canadian Council Art Bank and the Glenbow Museum.
