Rungius specialized in painting North American big game
animals set against brightly colored landscapes in the
Rocky Mountains. His compositions suggest the grandeur
of the large mammals and their beautiful habitats. After
studying art at the Berlin Art School and the Academy of
Fine Arts, Rungius began his painting career in his
native Germany, where animal painting was a more popular
specialization than in other European countries. A
sketching trip to Yellowstone in 1895 started Rungius'
long association with the American and Canadian West.
During the next 50 years, the artist hunted, camped,
sketched, and painted in the Yukon, Wyoming, and
Alberta. Carl Rungius disliked being called a sporting
artist, but his more important patrons, including Teddy
Roosevelt, were big game hunters who wanted paintings of
their favorite trophies. Rungius was typical of the big
game painters of the turn of the century because he was
both a hunter and a naturalist. He acquired much
knowledge of his subjects by tracking them and by
examining freshly shot specimens. |
