Opus One Vertical 2001-2004 (4 Bottles)
Opus One 2001
Napa Valley, Red Bordeaux Blend
750 ml / USA / 14.5% ABV

DC 98 | JD 92 | JS 92 | RP 92 | WE 95
"Small concentrated berries from a long harvest that lasted from 1st September 1 to 19th October. Michael Salacci arrived as winemaker this year, taking over as Patrick Léon retired. This was the first time that Opus had its own winemaker, and immediately you feel the impact of his work. He felt instinctively that Opus needed to go richer, and from this point on it more regularly hits the Californian stride. It comes through in the construction of the wine, almost chewy, with striking, sexy dark chocolate, black pepper and cassis fruits, still with great acidity to keep things raising towards the finish. This was also the first vintage released to the Bordeaux marketplace - so signalling a period of immense change. The wine stands up well and has a long life ahead. 3% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 32 days skin contact. Harvest from September 1 to October 19. 98/100"

Opus One 2002
Napa Valley, Red Bordeaux Blend
750 ml / USA / 14% ABV

DC 93 | RP 94 | VN 95
"I tend to think that recent vintages of Opus One are even greater than vintages made during this era, but the 2002 is certainly one of the top wines Opus has produced during the early part of this century. It boasts a dense plum/purple hue along with a striking bouquet of graphite, toasty oak, creme de cassis and acacia flowers. Full-bodied, opulent and young, it offers accessibility as well as silky tannins. A thoroughly complete wine that is pure and rich, it tastes like a hypothetical blend of a great Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon married to a Bordeaux Pauillac. Bravo! 94/100"

Opus One 2003
Napa Valley, Red Bordeaux Blend
750 ml / USA / 14% ABV

IWR 93 | JD 94 | JS 93 | RP 94 | TWI 95
"From a vintage that saw plenty of rain at harvest, the 2003 Opus One is nevertheless ripe and nicely concentrated, with plenty of intensity in its ripe cassis and redcurrant fruit as well as spicy, herbal, and cedary nuances. The tannins are certainly more present here, and probably always will be, but this is a classic, impeccably put-together Cabernet that will evolve for another 15 years. The blend is 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Malbec. 94/100"

Opus One 2004
Napa Valley, Red Bordeaux Blend
750 ml / USA / 14.5% ABV

JS 92 | RP 96 | ST 91 | VN 93 | WS 93
"Aged in 100% new French oak for 17 months and in bottle for 14 months prior to release, the 2004 Opus One is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. It boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with a sweet bouquet of lead pencil shavings, black currants and a hint of toasty oak. More evolved than usual, this full-bodied, opulent 2004 is part of the new wave of Opus Ones made under the administration of Philippe Dhalluin, the administrator of Mouton Rothschild, who has begun to exploit this estate’s enormous potential. This beauty can be drunk now or cellared for another 20 years. 96/100"
April 2014 (RP - Wine Advocate)
